THF Galleries: Photo Haiku of Mel Ledgard

Mel Ledgard

The Haiku Foundation honors the work of contemporary masters of the dual art of haiga: visual image wedded to haiku. This month’s featured artist is Mel Ledgard.

Mel lives in Yorkshire, UK. She has a BA degree in Silversmithing & Jewellery and an MA in Writing, but latterly spent her working life as a graphic/multimedia/website designer in the education and media sectors. For a few years, producing the BBC Radio 2 Folk Music website serendipitously combined making a living with a lifelong involvement in folk music and dance. She discovered haiku during her Writing degree, its Zen sensibilities appealing to her metaphysical inclinations. During that time she experimented with animated ‘hyperhaiku’ and created a multimedia version of Sheffield Hallam University’s student literary magazine, WebSheaf. She has had work published in Sheffield Thursday and Blithe Spirit (a sample of which is in the British Haiku Society’s Teaching Kit) but has mostly lurked on the periphery of the haiku world. She likes playing with iPhoneography and using the resultant imagery in haiga.
