Before you go to war with the pimples that are on your face, it is wise to know a little bit about the weapons in your arsenal. Some of the big companies who produce anti acne products have done a great job convincing people that their product is the only way to cure acne. The truth is, most of those big names share similar ingredients. Let’s take a look at what some of the most common products use, so you can better understand how to go about getting rid of your acne.

Over The Counter Anti Acne Products

Salicylic Acid: This is a beta hydroxy acid that is very common in over the counter acne products. It works to exfoliate the skin, and has the ability to penetrate into the pore to help break up the clog. Most people with mild or moderate acne should try to find an anti acne product with this ingredient in it first, as it is very effective for most people.

Benzoyl Peroxide: If you have heard of or used Clearasil or ProaActiv, then you have heard of benzoyl peroxide. The bacteria that causes acne is known as propionibacteria acnes. They are not able to survice in an area that contains large amounts of oxygen, so when benzoyl peroxide kills them off by introducing oxygen into the pore.

Tea Tree Oil: Some people always look for a natural alternative for curing diseases. Many people consider tea tree oil the natural alternative for benzoyl peroxide. While many people sweat by this treatment method, there have been few studies done to prove its anti acne properties.

Prescription Anti Acne Drugs

Tretinoin: This is the ingredient found in the popular presciption drug Retin-A. This retinoid is a form of vitamin A and is usually applied topically. If you go see a dermatologist about acne it is likely that this will be the first thing they put you on.

Isotretinoin: This is also a derivative of vitamin A, and is the ingredient found in Accutane. This is a pretty heavy duty drug, and is usually only used as a last resort. Unless you have a severe case of cystic acne, you will probably never need this drug.

These ingredients can be quite confusing for most people who are simply trying to get rid of acne. For more details about finding the right anti acne products for you, please check out my site Be Acne Free.
